Canoe sailing over the skyline of Toronto... Winterlicious 2012 food log

February 4, 2012
In Toronto, we have an (semi-)annual "event", where many restaurant in the city will participate.  They have prix fixe menus for lunch and dinner, so that Torontonians can enjoy fine dining and try out new restaurants at a slightly more afforable price.  And this is Winterlicious (and Summerlicious).  This year, my boyfriend and I went to Canoe.

Canoe is named one of the best restaurant in Canada.  It is not only famous for its food but also its location.  It has a phenomenal view of the Toronto skyline and lake.  Since Canoe is so popular, we didn't get a chance to try their dinner menu, so we made reservation for lunch instead (at 2:15pm too).

To start, I got Clover Roads Duck Rillette with Gribiche, Pretzel Bread & Forbes’ Wild Flavours and my boyfriend got Beluga Lentil Soup with Smoked Ham & Curry Crème Fraîche.

I really really like his soup, I wish I got that too.  But the Duck Rillette was not bad at all.  I wish there were more Pretzel Breads though, haha.

For our main course, I got Slow Cooked Heritage Salmon with Shellfish Velouté, Root Cellar Vegetables & Cornbread and he got Braised Alberta Lamb Pappardelle with Walnuts & Mill St. Coffee Porter Sauce.

The combination of the cornbread and the salmon is pretty awesome.  I want more!

As for desert, I had Le 1608 Cheese with Pretzel Bread & Butternut Squash Compote and he had Niagara Pear Panna Cotta with Orange & Nice Spice Chilled Consommé.

I like that the cheese is not too heavy and the Butternut Squash Compote is pretty tasty too.  His Panna Cotta, well it's Panna Cotta, you can't really go wrong with that lol.

I love food, and I love trying out new restaurants.  I wish we had more time that we can try other ones, but this time of the year is pretty busy.  Maybe in the summer, when Summerlicious comes around, we'll get to try one more restaurant =).

Next time if you come to Toronto around the end of January, you might wanna see if Winterlicious is running.  But make sure to call ahead as reservation starts about a month earlier.  Some popular restaurant, like Canoe, will be fully booked very soon, especially for dinner.

If you live in Toronto, what other restaurant would you recommend me to try next during Summerlicious?  There are just so many to choose!  Let me know your favourite!

  2. I went to Pan on the Danforth and it was sooo good! Obviously not as fancy as Canoe - I love trying all sorts of different foods but I think Canoe is too posh for the husband and I LOL!!  Amaya Bread Bar is great for Indian food!
