No budge but you can smudge: Maybelline Color Tattoo 24HR Eyeshadow

January 19, 2012

There have been so many "surprisinly amazing" products appearing at the drugstore lately: Revlon came out with Colorburst Lip Butter, L'Oreal with their Infaillible, and Maybelline with their Color Tattoo.  I'm going to review all of them, but today, we'll start from Maybelline Color Tattoo 24HR Eyeshadow!

Clockwise from top left: Pomegranate Punk, Bold Gold, Audacious Asphalt, Bad to the Bronze

At a reasonable price of CA $6.96 at Walmart (prices might vary), I bought 4 of the neutral/more wearable ones. I got 15 Audacious Asphalt25 Bad to the Bronze30 Pomegranate Punk, and 45 Bold Gold.  (And of course they had to have a sale after I bought them.... Why does this always happen to me?)

These also happened to be the most popular shades among all the colours for obvious reasons (they're more wearable than electric blue).  I picked these out because they are the colours that I would actually wear, and I can probably give these a good use.  I am always weary about drugstore cream shadows (Revlon Creme Eyeshadows quad and NYX Jumbo Pencils were a big disappointment, for example).  Thankfully, these are living up to my expectation (and its name).

The packaging of this product is like MAC PaintPot but with a plastic round flat top and a glass pot.  Or maybe like a cheap/less sturdy/lighter version the Chanel Illusion D'ombre pot (just the packaging, NOT the product).

When I first saw the display in store, I was disappointed with the tester after I tested it on my hand. They seemed way too creamy to stay put.  I don't know what got to me that I think I should try it again, but I'm glad I did.  I first purchased the Bad to Bronze and  Bold Gold. And before I even photographed it, I tried out Bad to Bronze.  Since it has such amazing colour on the eye, I went back and got some other colours.

- Bad to Bronze is a gorgeous bronze colour with slight shimmer and a metallic finish. I could tell that I am going to wear this a lot, especially in the Summer! (my favorite out of them all) I like pairing it with a shimmery beige colour on top. The two colours look amazing together!

- Bold Gold is a yellow gold colour with slight shimmer and a metallic finish similar to Bad to Bronze.  I think it looks quite like MAC Goldmine but in cream form and it's less warm.  That being said, it'll definitely make a great base for MAC Goldmine.  I have paired this with Pomegranate Punk and it looks very thanksgiving lol.

- Pomegranate Punk is a reddish plum colour with a sheen but no shimmer.  I think it can be compared to MAC Cranberry, based on the swatches, but more brown.  It's the least wearable out of the four, but that's just simply because I like my neutrals.  I wouldn't wear it too far in and wear something lighter in the inner corner, because it can look like you got punched in the eye.

Aydacuiys Asphalt is a silvery grey colour with no metallic finish or shimmer.  It had the similar finish with Pomegranate Punk but perhaps has a even unnoticeable sheen.  It makes a great base for smokey eyes.

Now on to the functionality of this range.  You can wear this alone or use it as a base.  I usually do the latter, meaning I would put eyeshadow on top, because I have quite oily eyelids (and I ALWAYS use a primer just in case).  The texture reminds me of Benefit Creaseless Cream Shadow/Liner, but more long wearing!  Yes, the wear is superb!  I checked multiple times during the day, and I don't see it transfer or crease.  Coming from me, a girl with oily lids, it's pretty awesome!

For the pigmentation and colour, you can see by my swatch fingers, they are pretty pigmented.  The colours I picked are obviously the colours I like, so all I can say is that I like them!?  LOL.  Here's these shadow swatched on my hand without primers:

Pretty amazing, eh!  I like to use a brush to apply these colours because it's less messy and I'd like to avoid pulling my eyelids. (you don't want wrinkles!)  But you can definitely use your fingers.  These are very creamy that it doesn't set right away.  So you can definitely blend it with a blending brush to smudge the colours out.  There's really no budge on my eyes, but to be honest, I only wear it for 8-10 hours, so I can't really say anything for the 24 hour claim.  But I left the swatches on my hand for a good 8 hours in bed.  I'm not a steady person while I sleep (apparently I do Karate kicks during), so I would expect that everything wears off, but these stay surprisingly good.

Keep in mind I do roll over a lot while I sleep, so this might not be the normal way to test it.  But this was on my hand anyway, so I thought I would show you the result.  I think Pomegranate Punk stays put really well in this test (but who wears eyeshadow on their hands... oops).

All in all, based on my experience, I am really impressed by these shadows.  The price point is very reasonable and quite affordable for a lot of people.  I would like to see more colours coming out, say, black, beige, shimmery white, navy blue, etc...  So if anyone from Maybelline is reading this, please convince people in charge to make more colours!  If there were all these colours, and maybe some other colours as well, I'll ditch other high-end cream shadows.  And FYI, my favourite one among these four is definitely Bad to the Bronze!

Have you tried these Maybelline Color Tattoo 24HR Eyeshadow yet?  Would you recommend any other colours?  Is there other drugstore cream shadow that is worth checking out?  Let me know!

Hope you all have a great one!

  9. I really want to try these out but these colours are not wearable enough for me for everyday (I usually wear super minimal eyeshadow)

  10. I find that this is great for "minimalistic" makeup, one swipe and you're good to go, well you still have to blend lol.  I think Bold Gold or Bad to the Bronze are great natural colours from this range if you want to try them out =). They're not as scary for sure!
